High School Answering Machine

November 19th, 2002

Over at Lots of Co., Max has found a rather wonderful recorded message high school teachers voted that their school should use:

Hello! You have reached the automated answering service of your school. In order to assist you in connecting to the right staff member, please listen
to all your options before making a selection:

* To lie about why your child is absent – Press 1

* To make excuses for why your child did not do his work – Press 2

[...]

As Max notes, it's probably an urban legend, but it's very funny nonetheless.

Total urban legend, of course–another friend (who is also a teacher) said he had seen the same text posted in his school's teacher workroom for the last two years. Still funny (and close to the mark), though…

Just because it's an urban legend, that doesn't mean it's not true.

I suspect most workplaces have this sort of list of "dumb things our customers say and do." It's just that everyone can relate to the ones teachers talk about.
