Fandom Escapist Election 2004

April 26th, 2004

Looking at some of the candidates on offer in the Fandom Escapist Election 2004, I’m not so sure that choosing between Bush and Kerry would be quite such an awful prospect after all. (Assuming I were actually in America in the first place and entitled to vote, that is.)

I mean, how do you choose between Lord Vetinari (”He doesn’t believe in unnecessary cruelty. He’s all for necessary cruelty, of course.”), a Beecher/Keller ticket and the truly scary Luthor/Luthor pairing? Perhaps the safest bets are Pembleton/Bayliss (”They speak for the dead. Let them speak for you.”) and Buffy/Faith (”Don’t send little boys to do a woman’s job.”)

I can tell I’m no longer a hip kid (at 45, I don’t pretend to be), because I didn’t recognize a few of these.

I’d suggest a mixed Sark/Lex Luthor ticket, myself, though I’m unclear who should be on top.

    I don’t recognize a whole bunch…

I’ve actually seen a couple of episodes of “Smallville” so I know the younger Luthor. But who’s the older one? Is it another instance of Lex Luthor?

  3. John Says:

The older Luthor is Lionel Luthor, Lex’s father. Judging by what I’ve seen of Smallville, he showed up a few times in the first season to complicate Lex’s life (usually by interfering with Lex’s management of the Smallville LexCorp plant), then in the second season he seemed to appear a bit more regularly. Let’s just say that he’s the man who made Lex Luthor the man he is today…

Gary, there are a few I had to think about a bit too. (I like to kid myself that this is because they’re from US shows which haven’t shown up on terrestrial TV over here yet, but the sad truth is that I too am on the wrong side of 40 now. And I was never a hip kid anyway…)
