Metro Bits

Metro Bits is a fascinating site devoted to documenting the world's subway systems.

The page of images of Metro Arts and Architecture is particularly good value. I wish the Tyne & Wear Metro had a few stations that looked as futuristic as the one in Santiago, or ones that were still basically rock caverns as in Stockholm, or as ornately decorated as the ones in Tashkent. (Though I'm glad that I don't have to deal with optical illusions like this one in Toronto – dragging myself in to work of a morning can be sufficiently disorienting as it is, thank you very much!)

The photo representing the Tyne & Wear Metro system (which they refer to, erroneously, as the "Newcastle" Metro throughout the site) on the Metros With a View page could have been better chosen – a shot taken a few yards further north and pointing directly down-river would have captured the Tyne's array of bridges much better – but in the end that's just a minor quibble given the sheer quantity of interesting material collected at the site.

    Or there's London……..

You could send photos to Metro Bits. I'm sure they would appreciate any suggestions…

If I had a camera and an eye for photography then I'd certainly consider doing so. Lacking both, I'll have to hope that someone else steps in helps them out.

I suppose you can argue that their photo does capture the Metro bridge, which is the focus of their interest after all. It's just that the sight of all the Tyne bridges is a bit special , not least because it's the view that signals that I'm back home again when I'm on a northbound train approaching Newcastle Central Station.
