Geek novels
November 12th, 2005
I've read fifteen out of the top twenty geek novels nominated by readers of the Guardian's Technology Blog. I'm a little surprised at a couple of the choices (If Neil Gaiman had to show up shouldn't it have been for the Sandman series rather than American Gods? Why on earth did John Wyndham's Trouble With Lichen come out ahead of his better-known works?) but all in all it's not a bad little list of SF from the last half-century or so.
I'm a bit disappointed at the absence of some of the members of the rising generation of British SF novelists – particularly Ken MacLeod and Charlie Stross – but no doubt their time will come. (But then, it might not last. See Jack Schofield's comment about the low scores for John Brunner's work, which back in the day was every bit as exciting and refreshing as that of this latest generation of British SF writers.)
