Party of Five

July 15th, 2006

Just a quick heads-up for any former uk-po5 list members who are reading this: ABC1 on Freeview are starting to run Party of Five daily on weekdays at 9.10am. According to Digiguide, they’re starting with the pilot episode on Monday 24 July 2006.

(Digiguide’s schedules don’t extend beyond Friday 28th at the moment, so I can’t say for certain whether the show will also be on at weekends, but I’d guess not. They’re too busy filling their weekends with six consecutive episodes of Scrubs or 8 Simple Rules or Less Than Perfect.)

Now, if I can only persuade my (cheap & nasty) VCR to listen to my (cheap & cheerful) Freeview box I might be able to remind myself of why I liked the show so much. If I’m really fortunate, ABC1 might even persevere with the show long enough for me to finally see the last two seasons, the ones that Channel 4 decided not to broadcast.

I was going to mention this, I promise!

Quite interesting, isn’t it. Trouble aired series 1 and possibly 2, what I really want to see again is series 3, the one with Alexondra Lee. The first two are available on DVD in the US but I really want 3 more than anything

  2. John Says:

Since ABC1 are going to blast through a season in just over four weeks, you might not have long to wait. (Though I have a horrible feeling that they’re going to tease us by running through season 1 then putting some other show in that timeslot, leaving us all dangling.)

  3. Simon Says:

Well we’ll know when the September schedules are released. PO5 series 2 starts on 23rd August. S3 would start on the 25th September

[John contemplates his VCR's obstinate refusal to record the output from his Freeview box.]

    *Sob*

  5. bea Says:

Hey. You gotta love Charlie’s hair.

  6. John Says:

You know, it’s been so long since I saw Po5 season 1 that I can’t even remember Charlie’s hairstyle from way back when. It doesn’t help that now I think of him as Jack from Lost as much as I do him as Charlie Salinger. (Incidentally, I don’t remember noticing Matt Fox’s tattoos when he was on Po5: was I just not paying attention back then, or has he added them since leaving the show?)

The funny thing is, when I talk about Lost with friends I keep tripping over my tongue because whenever I mention Matt Fox’s character I want to call him Charlie, but there’s another character called Charlie on Lost. My brain locks up for a fraction of a second while it goes through a Charlie? Jack? Charlie? Jack? cycle a few times before - 9 times out of 10, anyway - landing on the right name.

  7. bea Says:

Yeah I’d totally gotten used to calling him Jack but just watching the pilot of Po5 today, it was easy to slip back into Charlie.

Re the tattoos, I think Charlie just wore lots of long-sleeved, lumberjack shirts so it was probably always covered if Matthew Fox did have them at the time.

Did you manage to get your VCR to tape Freeview?

  8. John Says:

Sad to say, my VCR just refuses to accept input from my Freeview box: my only hope now is a sudden bout of unemployment. (I had hoped that ABC1 might be repeating the show at weekends, as they do with some of their other weekday daytime shows, but it doesn’t look as if they’re going to do so right now.)

I suppose that at least the episodes being shown now are ones I’ve already seen. Obviously I’ll be particularly sad to miss out on season 2 onwards (mmm, JLH) but I’ll live. If, on the other hand, they show seasons 5 and 6 - which I never saw, thanks to Channel 4’s infatuation with Dawson’s Creek causing them to drop Po5 - I may have to resort to desperate measures. Let me see: quit my job, or buy a better VCR? Tough call…

  9. Simon Says:

Digiguide’s latest update isn’t pleasent. While having S2 starting at the end of august, it’s now removed completely so that only S1 episodes are scheduled :(

  10. John Says:

Interesting (and depressing). I wonder whether they’ve decided not to show season 2 because the ratings for season 1 haven’t justified spending money to buy season 2 rights.

Perhaps they were hoping to benefit from Matt Fox’s higher profile (like ITV2 - or is it ITV4, I forget - who’ve recently started showing ‘Haunted’) and they’ve now discovered that not enough ‘Lost’ fans are around to watch a show that’s on when most of us are at work.

  11. Simon Says:

They probably only bought the rights to S1. If they’d paid for S2 they’d be showing it I believe. At 9:30 I’m surprised there’s anyone around to watch. I wonder how much promo they’ve done, I confess I haven’t watched any PO5 on ABC1

Haunted is on ITV1. It’s fairly watchable IIRC although I didn’t really keep up with it.

  12. John Says:

I’d imagine they had an option to buy season 2 and held off on exercising it until they saw how season 1 went.

You know, like the way Channel 4 dealt with season 5 the first time round: tease the viewers by saying that season 5 is coming, then run a poll after the ‘Dawson’s Creek’ season finale inviting viewers to ‘decide’ whether they should show the next season of DC or the next season of Po5.

[Not that I'm still bitter or anything.]

As it happens I caught an episode of ‘Haunted’ last night on ITV4. It struck me as the sort of show that could get monotonous quite rapidly unless there turns out to be some sort of wider story arc that’ll distract us from the corpse of the week. In that respect it’s a bit like JLH’s ‘Ghost Whisperer’, come to think of it.

As we’re on the subject of supernatural drama, I see that ITV2 are showing ‘Millennium’ season 1, starting this Saturday. Now that’s a show I’m glad of the chance to see again; I didn’t keep up with it when ITV (now ITV1) first showed it, so I’m glad of a second chance.

  13. Nick Says:

hey guys i was just wondering, u know the song played when advertising party of 5 on abc1, what is it? sounds good

lyrics sounds sumtin like…put the mine in the schroder?

  14. John Says:

It’s ‘My Sharona’ by The Knack. Good, punchy post-punk power pop.

  15. Nick Says:

thank you very much john, appreciate it

  16. John Says:

    No problem.

  17. Kelly Says:

So do we know will they run the next series of PO5 anytime??? It was great timing for my summer holiday, missing it though husband says maybe people were becoming too depressed … he never sat through it for more than the sad stuff anyways.

  18. John Says:

I haven’t seen any announcements about season 2. It looks as if they’re switching to an all-comedy lineup for their weekday mornings come September, so perhaps they’ll wait until another lengthy school holiday. If they’re willing to put out five episodes a week then they could easily dispose of a good chunk of season 2 over the Xmas/New Year. Or perhaps they’ll wait until next summer and work their way through a whole season again.

  19. marie Says:

regarding pof i know that abc1 has the rights up to and including season 4. does any one know when they will show season 2?

  20. John Says:

At the moment ABC1 aren’t saying.

With the end of the school holidays they seem to have switched to an all-comedy lineup for weekday mornings, so perhaps we’ll have to wait until the Xmas break. Or (and I hope I’m wrong here!) next summer.

  21. Unmusic Says:

Or “comedy”. They aired all of season one, the first ep from season two, THEN STOPPED.

My TiVo thinks they’re still ploughing through the seasons, however. Blargh.

  22. John Says:

Having read a few ABC1-related forums since my last comment, it appears that ABC1 have completely dropped all dramas from their schedules for the time being, so I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for any more Po5.

If we’re lucky, they’ll bring Po5 season 2 back to tie in with their showing of JLH’s ‘Ghost Whisperer’ next January.

  23. David Says:

After watching season 1 of PO5 I checked my recordings for the next week and was disappointed to find out it had been replaced. I emailed ABC1 and was told that ABC1 has no plans to show PO5 season 2 in the near future. I hope this helps even though you proberly know this by now.
