7 Wonders

November 2nd, 2007

The world’s internet users have spoken (mostly in large voting blocs motivated by national pride, it seems): we now have the New 7 Wonders of the World.

I think it’s a shame that only one of the new ‘wonders’ was constructed within the last hundred years. I appreciate that longevity is a factor, but even so I’d have liked to see the Eiffel Tower or the Sydney Opera House up there.

(When I read the National Geographic article, I was sure I’d read about this project somewhere before. It turned out that I had: I posted about it way back in 2001, when the poll – according to this Wired article – was due to run until June of that year. I can’t see any reference on the New7Wonders web site to a decision to extend the poll to run for seven years, so I can only imagine that they decided they liked the number 7 so much they’d carry on for that many years.)
