Gilmore Girls

June 5th, 2008

I don’t think I’ve seen a single trailer on E4, but it turns out that Gilmore Girls is finally coming to free-to-air TV in the UK, starting tomorrow morning at 8:50am.

Good golly, how long has that taken? Eight years? And what a bloody awful time slot. Still, if it builds an audience, it may lead to the final four seasons final being released onto UK Region 2 and I’ll be able to get them through Lovefilm. There’s no way I’ll remember to watch it when it’s on.

As it happened I was on sick leave on Friday and I got a chance to see the first episode. I can see what you meant about the sharp dialogue and delivery. Fun as the dialogue was, the scene that truly hooked me in the first episode was the one in the hotel kitchen where the accident-prone cook kept leaving utensils in harm’s way and her staff were silently, clearly out of habit, hovering around her picking things up and putting out fires. Something about the absurdity of their kitchen ballet tickled me no end.

There were things that irritated me - first and foremost, the notion that Lorelai had gone got Rory to the point where she was invited to take up a place at an exclusive private school without establishing what it would cost for Lorelai to attend. The first thing I thought when we saw the scene where Lorelai was telling her friend the cook about the letter confirming that Rory had been accepted was that they were going to make the episode revolve around what sacrifices would have to be made to fund Rory’s attendance at such an institution. (Which, of course, we did. But I didn’t expect that at that point in the story I’d already given more thought to this issue that Lorelai apparently had.)

What I can’t say based on just a single episode is whether this sort of idiocy is symptomatic of some sort of blind spot on Lorelai’s part when it comes to trying to get Rory what she wants/needs, or whether Lorelai’s apparent lack of foresight was just a plot device to set up her and Rory being drawn, reluctantly, back into Lorelai’s parents’ orbit so as to provide a focal point for some inter-generational tension in episodes to come.

Unfortunately I’m probably going to be feeling well enough to go back to work tomorrow, so I won’t get the chance to see episode 2. I might just have to keep an eye out for the DVDs, or hope that the show turns up for rental on iTunes.

Sorry your sick but sorrier that your not sick enough to catch ep 2 - Re your irritation(s) yep granted Lorelai should have forseen the big picture re the school fees but you missed the main point which I think was that she was leaving her old school and starting Chiltern within the space of 2 days, Rory is going to Ciltern well into the start of the term. I do think you are correct that yes it does set us up for the whole Emily vs Lorelai 7 series battle. Also real glad it been shown on free-to-air TV to borrow a phrase. I’m was so sure I was the only one that had ever heard of this show in the UK.

However if you want an irritation you will not notice as you were back to your fit state that in Ep2 Emily hair had grown in the space of a weekend.

Freaky……..I just bought seasons 1-3 (£15 yeah and not each) and it got delivered the day it started on E4. Trust me this is a series you gotta OWN. There will always be a joke that you just couldn’t catch or there’ll be a pop cultural reference that may need looking up.

Finally good to see that Guys can appreciate this show too!

    Be seeing ya!
