The Girl with the Immigrant Song

June 2nd, 2011

I haven't read Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy or seen the Swedish film/TV adaptations of his work, so I have no idea how well the teaser for the US adaptation of the first book matches the source material.

Come to that, it's never a good idea to mistake a stylish teaser/trailer for solid evidence of a film's quality. Granted, David Fincher working with Daniel Craig, Christopher Plummer, Stellan Skarsgård and a pretty good supporting cast is a good sign, but you just never know.1

William Goldman's famous quip referred to the inability to assess in advance whether any given film would be financially successful, rather than the question of whether the film would be any good, but it's certainly applicable in the latter case too: "nobody knows anything." Not until the film is out in cinemas later this year.

For all that uncertainty, there's one thing I can say for sure: I'm going to be downloading the Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross/Karen O cover of Immigrant Song that features in the teaser the second it shows up on iTunes. I'm not much of a Led Zeppelin fan, but damn that's one thrilling cover version.

  1. After all, at one point The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Alien 3 looked like good ideas to someone.
