More about Tablet Computing

Further to my post from earlier this week, Dan Bricklin goes into more detail about the history of Tablet PCs.

It's always helpful to be reminded by someone who was there at the time that Microsoft's "innovations" are rarely as shiny, new and wonderful as they seem. Which is not to say that it's bad news that Microsoft are pushing the tablet PC again. Bricklin is right that if Microsoft follow through we could see a revival in third party software for tablet PCs, which should lead to a period of innovation and open up some new market niches for companies based outside Redmond to fill.

What we definitely don't need is for everyone to settle for using the pen-based extensions for MS Office to run the same old software. Let's see someone develop a word spreadsheet application which takes full advantage of the ability to use a pen to link cells together, or a database with a user interface expressly designed to work with a pen and tablet interface.
