Bubba Ho-Tep reviewed

Lucius Shepard has posted a rave review of Bubba Ho-Tep at Electric Story.

Since it's unlikely that the film will ever get a UK cinema release beyond the odd festival appearance, I'm just going to have to wait for the DVD release. Which I'm confident will be worth waiting for. According to one poster to the IMDB message board, the DVD will feature Bruce Campbell doing a commentary in character as Elvis. Groovy!

I'm not sure I agree with Sheperd's argument that the best, most entertaining SF films have mostly been low budget affairs. Certainly there are good SF B-movies, but there are worthwhile big budget Hollywood SF films too. Take, for example, Planet of the Apes - that's the Franklin Schaffner original, not the horrible Tim Burton remake, obviously. It cost US$5.8 million, which was a decent sum in 1968. (To put that figure in perspective, consider two other 1968 films: Rosemary's Baby cost US$3.8 million, whereas The Thomas Crown Affair cost US$4.3 million.)

More recently, the likes of the two X-Men films and Gattaca have showed that mainstream Hollywood is perfectly capable of pulling off decent SF. I can't deny that there have been plenty of poor big budget films, but I'd say that Sturgeon's Law applies as much to SF B-movies as to their higher-profile big-budget cousins. We just remember (and regret) the high profile failures more than the B-movies.

When I last checked the official web site a few days ago there was no news of a date for the DVD release, or even any confirmation that there would be a DVD release at all. I'd guess that as long as the film is still being shown at festivals and in short runs in cities here and there they'll hold off on a DVD release.

However, considering the highly complimentary reviews Bubba Ho-Tep has been getting, I'd be astonished if there weren't a DVD release at some point.
