Taking the plunge

The BBC News site has an article describing the latest plans to explore the Marianas Trench, some 35,000 feet down out in the mid-Atlantic.

The plan is to build the Hybrid Remote Operated Vehicle, a very tough little robot which will be capable of operating in a semi-autonomous mode for those locations where a cable/tether would prove too restrictive.

It's a daunting task; the conditions the HROV will face are in some ways just as hostile as those faced by space probes. On the other hand, at least the HROV stands a pretty decent chance of encountering strange, alien life forms if it survives long enough to look around for a while. That's strange, alien, nonentient life forms, of course. (If not, here's hoping that the Atlantean Sea Defence Forces prove to be worse shots than the Martian Anti-Aircraft Corps.)
