Kelly Holmes, Olympic champion
Kelly Holmes' reaction on crossing the line at the end of tonight's Women's 800m final was the moment of the games for me. I hadn't known that she'd said this would be her last Olympics (though a moment's reflection should have told me that we've been watching her compete at the highest level for about a decade now), so it was a real delight to see her cross the line, throw up her arms in celebration, calm down as she realised how tight it had been, watch the replay on the stadium's scoreboard, then give a dazzling smile and raise her arms in triumph as she realised that she'd finally got the reward she deserved after so many near-misses and injury-wracked seasons. Simply marvellous.
Even if Paula Radcliffe hadn't had a really, really bad day in yesterday's marathon, I'd have said that Kelly Holmes deserves to be the prime female contender for this year's Sports Personality of the Year award. (Sadly, now that we have a winning cricket team and a formula 1 driver who threatens to actually win a race at some point this season Kelly Holmes will probably finish no better than third. Or possibly fourth if Wayne Rooney behaves himself in the first half of the new Premiership season.)

Since Rooney is injured for quite a while I'm sure he'll behave himself for a good few months, at least on the pitch

I don't think the BBC is quite ready to hand the big award to someone who's been attracting some of the tabloid headlines Rooney has of late.
